Before rushing to the nearest carpet retailer to purchase flooring for your home, it is important to take time to consider which kind of carpet is best for your home and room situation. There are several different things to consider, including: style, color, carpet fiber, the size of the room, the anticipated traffic, lighting, and more. Taking time to ask yourself these questions and considering the answers will make it easier to purchase the right carpet.

Selecting the Right Carpet for Your Home

These questions are designed to help you think about the available options and how to narrow them down to choose the carpet that will work best for your home.

What style, color, and type of carpet fiber do you prefer?

Your preference should be the first thing you consider, because depending on the answers to the following questions, the first thing you like may not be the best choice. Choose a few favorites to work with as you narrow your options down. Considering style, color, and carpet fiber type will also help you determine what feasibly fits within your budget.

What kind of cushioning will you need?

Carpet cushion plays a role in comfort when the carpet is walked on. Cushion and padding is important, because it also helps keep the life in carpet and provides a certain level of stain protection. Purchasing optimal padding will make a great impact on how well the carpet looks and feels in your home.

How will the room be used?

If the room is going to be a center hub for activity in the home, more use will likely mean more maintenance, especially if a light color is selected. Using a loop pile option will help the carpet stand up to more activity.

Will the room be heavily trafficked?

Heavily trafficked rooms will naturally be subject to more dirt and dust, so lightly colored carpets are not the best choice. If the room is not used often, a lighter color may be a good option because it won’t require as much work to maintain.

Does the room have direct access to the outdoors?

Rooms with direct access to the outdoors will be subject to additional dirt and grime tracked in. Darker colors will do a better job at hiding the dirt. A loop pile option will provide a bit more strength, allowing the carpet to last longer. Using different styles and light colors may make the carpet harder to keep clean and presentable, and may cut its lifetime.

Are there indoor pets in the home?

Pets will add wear and tear on the carpet, so it is ideal to choose a cut pile carpet because they are easier to maintain. It is a good idea to select a carpet with a solution dyed fiber in case the pets have accidents in the home.

Are there stairs in the home?

If there are stairs in the home, carpeting them may lead to cleaning and maintenance hassles later on. Consider how often the stair case is used, and what it looks like without the carpet. If the stairs are wooden, why hide the natural beauty of the wood? Consider using a small piece of carpet on each stair rather than completely carpeting every stair.

What is the size of the room?

The color of the carpet will create an illusion about the size of the room. For larger rooms, a darker color carpet will help the room by giving it a “warmer” feel. If the room is small and you want to open it up and make it appear larger, a lighter carpet is the way to go.

What is the lighting in the room like?

Consider whether you will be using natural light in the room, or rely on the use of electricity to produce light. The natural light will allow more of the carpet’s true color to show. In rooms where there is a lack of natural lighting, it may be necessary to use a lighter shade of the color you want, because the carpet will look darker than it really is. When selecting a color, consider warmer colors will help give the room more energy, while cooler colors will invoke a sense of calm.

If you have a small room with direct access to the outdoors, you may find you need the light color to enlarge the room, and the dark color to hide dirt. You could either: use a light color with a door mat and require no shoes in the house, use a dark color and deal with the room looking small, or you could use a medium color to get the benefits of both. While the answers to these questions may not give you a foolproof answer to which carpet to choose, you will be better armed with knowledge when you make the purchase.

The number of carpet choices available can easily overwhelm buyers. Taking a second to break it down and learn about the styles and types available will make the purchase decision easier. Understanding what the options are will help in choosing the best carpet for the situation.

Styles and Types of Carpet

Carpet is most commonly found in two types of construction: cut pile and loop pile. Each construction offers various styles to choose from.

Cut Pile: This carpet gets its durability through the fiber used, the density of the tufts, and the twist of the yarn. There are four popular styles to choose from: textured plush, Saxony, frieze, and cable.

Plush: This has a smooth and even finish, providing a more formal look.

• Textured: This style uses low density fibers of uneven heights. The resulting look hides dirt with an informal look, but it is not suited for high traffic areas.

• Saxony: This has a smooth and even finish, but the fibers are longer than a textured plush, and the fibers have a twist. Though this is the most popular style of carpet on the market, it has a tendency to show footprints and other marks more than other carpets.

• Frieze: This carpet style features long fibers with more twists, so the resulting texture is informal. It hides foot prints and other marks easier than other carpets, but is generally not suited for high traffic areas. If the piles are longer, it is called “shag.”

• Cable: This style of carpet is made with thicker and longer fibers to provide a more “cozy” feel to the carpet when walked on.

Loop Pile: Loop pile carpets do not cut the yarn tips, making the loops visible. They are durable in construction, and are considered an “all-purpose” carpet. There are various styles to choose from including: level loop, patterned multi-level loop, and cut and loop.

Level Loop or Berber: This carpet style features packed short looped fibers. This provides a durable surface for high trafficked areas with an informal appearance. Some color flecks in the fiber may make it easier to hide dirt, but the height of the fibers may make the seams more visible.

• Patterned Multi-Level Loop: This carpet style features loops of varying heights to create a texture and or pattern.

• Cut and Loop: This carpet style is a mixture between cut pile and loop pile fibers. The variant makes for a textured appearance that is ideal for highly trafficked areas. As an added bonus, this type of carpet also hides dirt and stains.

Quality of Carpet

Carpet quality is determined by a variety of factors including: the fiber type, the fiber construction, weight, density, and twist. There are some manufacturers that refer to carpet by grade, but there is no universal grade system in place for carpet. The “grades” assigned to carpet by the manufacturer are generally used as a marketing tool. Though traffic ratings are important, one company’s “high traffic” rating may be better than another.

Weight

The weight of a carpet is important as it shows how many fibers are present. The more fibers, the heavier the carpet; the heavier the carpet, the better. The face weight of the carpet is usually provided when selecting the right carpet for a home or business.

Fiber Types

The durability, look and feel, and price of carpet are partially determined by the fiber used to make it. The most common fiber types are: nylon, olefin, polyester, acrylic, wool, and blends.

Nylon: This is the most popular fiber type used for carpeting. There are two different kinds of nylon used to make carpeting: nylon 6, and nylon 6,6. Nylon is present in roughly 60% of all carpets sold in the United States. During manufacturing, dye is added to produce a variety of colors. Nylon is a highly durable fiber, resistant to wear and tear. It is generally not a stain repelling fiber, though treatments are available to help protect it against staining. It is a conductor of static electricity, and when left in direct sunlight for long periods of time, will fade.

• Olefin: This fiber is not as resilient as nylon, but it is less likely to fade. It is a strong fiber that is resistant to wear and tear. This is an ideal fiber for any outdoor carpeting use because it is resistant to mold and mildew. This is not a comfortable carpet to walk on with bare feet. The seams of the carpet fibers may be more visible than with other fibers.

• Polyester: Polyester is increasing in popularity because it is a more cost effective option than other fibers. It is not suitable for highly trafficked areas, because it is less resilient than nylon fiber and is more likely to show damage and fade. If used with a thick cut-pile construction, it has a soft feel.

• Acrylic: Acrylic is not a widely used fiber, but it provides the look and feel of wool based carpets, without the expense. It is not a major conductor of static electricity, and is resistant to mold and mildew.

• Wool: Wool is the most expensive fiber in the carpet market today, because it is the only natural fiber used in carpet production. It feels good against bare feet and is highly durable. It is stain and dirt resistant, but will fade easily in direct sunlight.

• Blends: Blends of these fibers are used to improve the overall quality of carpet in terms of look and feel, and durability. The most commonly used blends are wool and nylon, and olefin and nylon.

Fiber Construction

The durability of a carpet relies heavily on the fiber construction.

• Bulked Continuous Filament: Otherwise known as BCF, Bulked Continuous Filament is yarn made from one strand of fiber. Texture is added to the yarn to add to the bulk of the carpet which helps to make the twist more permanent, increasing durability and the life of the final carpet. All Build Direct carpets are made with this construction.

• Staple: Staple construction is fibers made into short pieces of yarn, which inevitably causes the carpet to shed, and the fibers must be removed by vacuuming.

• Twist: Carpet fibers are twisted around additional fiber to strengthen the final carpet. It makes it more resistant to wear and matting, and texture changes.

• Heat Setting: Heat setting “locks in” the twist, to keep it from unraveling to strengthen the final carpet.

• Tufting: The finishing step to produce carpet, the fibers are pushed through needles and tufted to the backing. This is the step that determines the density because of the amount of yarn and how close the tufts are.

Density

Density is important to the life of a carpet because it shows how many fibers are used in the pile and how close the fibers are tufted together. The rule of thumb is: the denser the carpet is, the better quality it is. Test the density by running fingers through the carpet to determine if it possible to feel the backing. If it is hard to feel the backing, the carpet is dense.

Colors and Patterns

Colors and patterns are available in all kinds of carpet, regardless of construction, fibers, and type. There are enough colors and patterns available to suit any decor. Light colors make a room seem larger than it is, but they will show dirt and stains easily. Medium colors will hide dirt and stains a bit, so they are ideal for areas near the entrances of a building. Multiple colors may make a room look dated if the colors are not carefully chosen because they are not as common. They will also hide dirt and debris. Patterns are a great choice for children’s rooms because they come in a range from geometrical to floral.

Armed with this information, buyers will be able to determine the best carpet for the room(s) in question and the available budget for the project. When properly cared for, carpet can last many years and be an excellent investment.

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 15:28:00 -0700 Diablo Flooring,Inc : Here is why we should all Shop Local http://diabloflooring.posterous.com/diablo-flooringinc-here-is-why-we-should-all http://diabloflooring.posterous.com/diablo-flooringinc-here-is-why-we-should-all

SHOP LOCAL  For Your Carpet And Flooring Project

When you shop at a mega-retailer chain store or an online retailer, most of your dollars leave the local economy. You may save a few cents, but the loss to our hometowns results in local unemployment, higher taxes, and reduced services. By supporting locally-owned, independent businesses, communities keep their dollars working for them as they enrich the local economy, increase the diversity of available products, provide better service and improve the quality of life for all of us.

In the late summer of 2005, Kepler’s, a fifty-year-old independent bookstore in Menlo Park, California, abruptly shut down. Owner Clark Kepler explained that bookstore chains and Amazon.com had displaced so much of the store’s sales that he could no longer pay the bills. But before Kepler could file for bankruptcy, the business was swept up in an outpouring of community grief. Hundreds of local residents rallied outside the shuttered store, which was soon covered in forlorn love letters from customers describing how the bookstore had been the center of community life and what a loss it was.

“Can’t the store be saved? You’re one of the main reasons I’m here.” Many offered money: “How about a monthly donation? I can do $50/mo… Give us a Web site so we can all support you. Let us help. Please.” Soon someone set up SaveKeplers.com and the pledges poured in.

Five weeks after it had closed, Kepler’s was back, saved by a group of local investors who vowed to return the business to sound financial footing, and numerous small donations from residents. One of the more remarkable aspects of this community effort to save a bookstore is that many of the people who rallied – who so adored this business that they could not conceive of their town without it and were willing to give their time and even their money to save it – confessed in interviews with reporters covering the story that they, too, had been buying more and more books online and at Target and Borders.
They loved the store for its many author events and for the joy of browsing and meeting neighbors, and for the sense of community it fostered, but that devotion did not always translate into regular patronage. The store’s near closure brought into stark relief just what was at stake.

Trading independent retailers for big-box chains weakens the local economy. This is because local stores recycle a much larger share of their sales revenue back into the local economy, while chains siphon most of the dollars spent at their stores out of the community, funneling them back to corporate headquarters or to distant suppliers. The added economic benefit of local stores has been dubbed the “local premium”. Several studies have quantified it. From Andersonville IL, Austin TX, Boulder CO and San Francisco, economic impact studies show that locally owned stores generate greater benefits for the local economy than do national chains. The Andersonville Study, for instance, shows that for every $100 a consumer spends: Local businesses give back $68 to the local economy. Chain stores only give back $43.

The Local Premium impacts:
· Local payrolls, as locally owned businesses spend a larger share of their revenue on local labor because they carry out all management functions on-site, rather than at corporate headquarters.
· Procurement, as local retailers spend more than twice as much buying goods and services from other local businesses. They bank locally; hire local accountants, attorneys, designers, and other professionals; advertise in local media; and source inventory from local firms.
· Profits; because their owners live in the area, a larger portion of the local retailers’ profits stay within the local economy.
· Charitable giving, as local retailers donate more on average to local charities and community organizations than the chains do.

Adding dollars circulating in the local economy translates into a larger number and wider variety of available jobs. The implications of the local premium for how cities approach economic development are significant. Not only do big-box stores eliminate more retail jobs than they create, but they reduce local economic activity and job creation in other sectors. Conversely, expanding local businesses generates substantially greater economic benefits.

By supporting locally-owned, independent businesses, communities keep their dollars working for them as they enrich the local economy, increase the diversity of available products, provide better service and improve the quality of life for all of us. During this recession, now more than ever, if you understand this issue and care about your community you should PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HOUSE IS!

Wed, 04 May 2011 22:27:00 -0700 Diablo Flooring,Inc - Is FREE really free? http://diabloflooring.posterous.com/diablo-flooringinc-is-free-really-free http://diabloflooring.posterous.com/diablo-flooringinc-is-free-really-free

Do you work for free? I am guessing your answer is no. So what makes you believe that when a carpet store advertises free installation of their carpet it is really free? The plain and simple truth is that no one works for free. Not the window installer, the siding installer or the flooring installer.

Unfortunately, deceptive advertising runs rampant in the flooring business. Everyday we are bombarded with ads offering two rooms for the price of one. Buy one room and get two rooms free. Buy two rooms and get the rest of the house carpeted free. Whole house free installation with carpet purchase. Free pad with your carpet purchase. Free financing for 12 months.

The truth is in the bottom line. An educated customer will take the time to compare apples to apples. He or she will not only compare the quality of the carpet but the quality of the pad. He or she will want to know how many square feet they are buying to cover the area and where the seams are going to be. They will want to know what furniture they need to move or what the cost is to have the installers move it. They will want to know if the installation carries a warranty and if the installers are certified or licensed.

It really makes no difference if the square foot price is less if the bottom line is more. The customer who gets free installation is paying more if the amount of material sold is more than what was really needed. Finally one should ask do I really want free installation or do I want a professional who is paid like a professional to install the carpet in my home.
